Emergency Orthodontic Care

Emergency Orthodontic Care

A broken bracket, a poking wire, a loose band. Orthodontic emergencies happen, and when they do, you want someone who can help fast. At Citrus Grove Orthodontics, we’re here for families across Whittier and Orange County when unexpected issues come up during treatment. Just give us a call and we’ll get your teen taken care of as quickly as possible.

When Something Goes Wrong, We’re Here to Help

Most orthodontic emergencies aren’t as scary as they seem in the moment. A wire that’s poking the cheek, a bracket that’s come loose, or a sore spot from a new adjustment can all be handled pretty easily. In many cases, we can walk you through a quick fix over the phone to keep your teen comfortable until we can see them in the office.

For situations that need hands-on attention, we offer same-day and next-day emergency appointments so you’re never left waiting. Whether it’s a sports injury, a broken appliance, or just unexpected discomfort, our team knows how to handle it calmly and efficiently.

We also equip every patient with orthodontic wax and simple care instructions at the start of treatment, so you’ll have what you need to manage minor issues at home. Our goal is to make sure one small hiccup never derails your teen’s progress or their day.

How to Tell If It’s a Real Emergency

Not every orthodontic issue needs an urgent visit. A loose bracket that’s still attached to the wire or a little soreness after an adjustment can usually wait until your next appointment. But if your teen has a wire digging into their cheek that wax won’t cover, swelling or bleeding that isn’t stopping, or they took a hit to the mouth and something feels loose, go ahead and call us right away. We’d much rather you call and find out everything is fine than have your teen uncomfortable when we could have helped.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Orthodontic Care

What counts as an orthodontic emergency?

True orthodontic emergencies include severe pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter medication, trauma to the mouth or teeth, a wire that's embedded in the cheek or gum, or significant swelling. More common issues like a loose bracket or a mildly poking wire are urgent but not emergencies, and we can usually talk you through a temporary fix until you come in.

What should I do if a bracket comes loose?

Don't panic. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax if it's causing irritation. If it comes off completely, save it and bring it to your next appointment. Then give us a call so we can schedule a time to reattach it.

A wire is poking my teen's cheek. What can we do at home?

Use a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab to gently push the wire away from the cheek. If that doesn't work, cover the end of the wire with a small piece of orthodontic wax. You can also use clean nail clippers to carefully trim the wire as a last resort. Then call us to schedule a visit so we can fix it properly.

Do you charge extra for emergency visits at your Whittier and Orange offices?

No. If your teen is an active patient with us, emergency visits related to their treatment are part of the care we provide. We want you to call us whenever something feels wrong, without worrying about extra costs.

How fast can we get an emergency appointment?

We do our best to see emergency patients the same day or the next business day at whichever location is most convenient for you. When you call, let us know what's going on and we'll find the earliest time that works.
