Some Typical Questions

Orthodontics, as defined by the American Academy of Orthodontics (AAO), is a branch of dentistry that prevents, diagnoses, and treats dental and facial irregularities. While early attempts to straighten teeth date back to ancient Greece and Egypt, the first recorded use of “orthodontia” and the establishment of the first orthodontic school occurred in 1901.

Today, orthodontics has evolved with modern dental technology, offering a variety of options, from traditional metal braces to removable clear aligners. Advanced modeling and computer imaging now allow for customized appliances, providing faster and more effective results tailored to each patient’s needs.

Undergoing orthodontic treatment, particularly at an early age, helps ensure that teeth and jaws function properly. A well-aligned bite improves the ability to bite, chew, and speak more comfortably. Misaligned teeth can make cleaning difficult, leading to issues like enamel wear, tooth decay, and gum disease. Additionally, orthodontic treatment enhances the appearance of your smile, boosting both oral health and confidence.

At the initial consultation, we take X-rays and digital images of the entire mouth, including teeth, gums, and jaw. We may also take an impression, creating a precise mold of the upper and lower jaws to ensure the appliance fits perfectly. Our team will conduct a thorough physical exam, discuss hygiene practices, and address any questions or concerns.

At the next appointment, we’ll place the agreed-upon appliance and provide instructions on care, maintenance, and future visits. Follow-up appointments, typically every 6 to 10 weeks, are essential to monitor progress and make adjustments, ensuring the teeth and jaw move as planned and preventing any issues from worsening.

Learn About Orthodontic Treatments We Offer

Phase One Orthodontics

Phase One orthodontics is an early interceptive treatment designed to address significant dental issues in a young child’s developing mouth.

Phase Two Orthodontics

Phase Two orthodontics may include braces, clear aligners, or other alternative treatments—and it’s not just for kids; adults can benefit from Phase Two treatment too!

Adult Orthodontics

More adults are seeking orthodontic treatment, not only to achieve a straighter smile but also to address various oral health concerns.

Palatal Expansion

In some cases, children develop a narrow upper jaw, which can potentially lead to dental issues later in life.

Growth Appliances

We use growth appliances to address various issues, helping guide the jaw and teeth into their proper alignment.

Fixing Bites

Proper bite alignment is essential for oral health. Correcting bite issues can significantly improve oral function, appearance, and overall well-being.
